Whether you’re poolside, beach-bound or city slicking, beautifying in the summer heat is an ordeal. In an effort to keep themselves matte, dry and smooth, many resort to a bevy of beauty products full of chemicals and unpronounceable preservatives. Toss the toxins and make summer sweeter (and sweat-proof!) with green products at JuJu Salon & Organics.
Philadelphia’s go-to resource for organic beauty supplies and treatments since opening in 2005, JuJu’s new expanded location on Fabric Row is full of products Mother Nature would be into. Combat underarm nastiness without the harmful aluminum oxide with Bubble & Bee Organic’s Pit Putty. Banish burn and retain a healthful glow with Keys Solar Rx Moisturizing Sunblock. Or create perfect straight-from-the-shore waves with vegan brand Sevi’s Blue Yarrow Hair Texturizer with Sea Salt. You’ll be looking good and doing good all in one gorgeous move.

As much as I love sorting and sifting through products to find natural beauty must-haves that I know will make you want to ditch your old stuff in an instant, I’m always up for help with the process. I love getting product leads from others who are savvy about natural beauty. Sometimes I even get lucky enough to receive a product recommendation from a true expert, in this case Julie Ebner, founder of Juju Salon & Organics in Philadelphia. Juju, one of Elle magazine’s Top 100 Salons in America for 2009, is one of Philly’s go-to beauty destinations for natural hair and skin care services...

Featured Aesthetician: Renee Bruskof
To treat our sensitive, breakout-prone skin, Bruskof combined organic products with high-tech treatments. She used an exfoliating lemongrass cleanser on our dry areas, swiped a salicylic-acid-and-rose toner over our T-zone, and zapped our pimply chin with high-frequency waves to reduce the bacteria there. When the facial was over, our skin had a dewy glow. A week later, our blemishes had disappeared.

When I heard about the raw food facial JuJu Spa & Organics in Philly, I had a flashback to those infomercials showing everything you can put through your juicer (whole carrots! a cactus!). I’ve never been much of a raw foodie, apart from ordering sashimi and green salads. But pureeing your meals and not cooking anything above 115 degrees supposedly delivers lots of benefits, including better digestion, stronger immunity, and—here’s where my eyes light up—radiant skin. Everything is so fresh, in fact, that you can actually eat the products. Yes, that’s right. You could put a spoon in the Organic Cellular Repair Mask and eat it for breakfast if you wanted to...

Dyeing your hair at home always seems like a great idea at first: "Why waste $150 at the salon when I can do it myself?" But once you're trapped in the bathroom taking in lungfuls of fumes, you wonder whether the savings are really worth it. "The strong odor present in most hair dyes is from ammonia." says Julie Ebner, owner of Juju Salon & Organics in Philadelphia.

Whether you dye your hair to follow trends, to cover pesky grays or to test for truth in the saying "blondes have more fun," hair color can have a big impact on how you look and feel about yourself. So it's not surprising that a 2005 P&G survey found that 65 percent of women aged 15-75 had colored their hair in the past 12 months. But studies show that hair dye isn't having such a positive effect on your health or that of the environment.
