Haute Living
Worship the Sun & Earth With Green Products from JuJu
July 30, 2010

By Melissa Auman Greiner

Whether you’re poolside, beach-bound or city slicking, beautifying in the summer heat is an ordeal. In an effort to keep themselves matte, dry and smooth, many resort to a bevy of beauty products full of chemicals and unpronounceable preservatives. Toss the toxins and make summer sweeter (and sweat-proof!) with green products at JuJu Salon & Organics.
Philadelphia’s go-to resource for organic beauty supplies and treatments since opening in 2005, JuJu’s new expanded location on Fabric Row is full of products Mother Nature would be into. Combat underarm nastiness without the harmful aluminum oxide with Bubble & Bee Organic’s Pit Putty. Banish burn and retain a healthful glow with Keys Solar Rx Moisturizing Sunblock. Or create perfect straight-from-the-shore waves with vegan brand Sevi’s Blue Yarrow Hair Texturizer with Sea Salt. You’ll be looking good and doing good all in one gorgeous move. hauteliving.com

Sevi Blue Yarrow Styling Gel
By Jolene Hart

As much as I love sorting and sifting through products to find natural beauty must-haves that I know will make you want to ditch your old stuff in an instant, I’m always up for help with the process. I love getting product leads from others who are savvy about natural beauty. Sometimes I even get lucky enough to receive a product recommendation from a true expert, in this case Julie Ebner, founder of Juju Salon & Organics in Philadelphia. Juju, one of Elle magazine’s Top 100 Salons in America for 2009, is one of Philly’s go-to beauty destinations for natural hair and skin care services... beautyiswellness.com

To treat our sensitive, breakout-prone skin, Bruskof combined organic products with high-tech treatments. She used an exfoliating lemongrass cleanser on our dry areas, swiped a salicylic-acid-and-rose toner over our T-zone, and zapped our pimply chin with high-frequency waves to reduce the bacteria there. When the facial was over, our skin had a dewy glow. A week later, our blemishes had disappeared. allure.com

Where to Get a Food Facial in Philadelphia
By Kari Molvar

When I heard about the raw food facial JuJu Spa & Organics in Philly, I had a flashback to those infomercials showing everything you can put through your juicer (whole carrots! a cactus!). I’ve never been much of a raw foodie, apart from ordering sashimi and green salads. But pureeing your meals and not cooking anything above 115 degrees supposedly delivers lots of benefits, including better digestion, stronger immunity, and—here’s where my eyes light up—radiant skin. Everything is so fresh, in fact, that you can actually eat the products. Yes, that’s right. You could put a spoon in the Organic Cellular Repair Mask and eat it for breakfast if you wanted to... offManhattan.com

Fink said she hopes opening her business in these rough economic times can inspire others not to be afraid to open businesses. Eco-chic is a trend that has consumers buying anything from bamboo yoga pants to burlap and muslin handbags. And eco-friendly salons are not uncharted territory in the U.S. Julie Ebner, owner of juju Salon & Organics, opened her organic salon in 2005 in Philadelphia and has since expanded it to include a spa. Ebner believes people are more health- and planet-conscious now and need to be given options. "Our power is in our wallets, we choose what we are going to spend our money on," Ebner said.

How To Eco-Chic
by Julie Knapp

Whether you dye your hair to follow trends, to cover pesky grays or to test for truth in the saying "blondes have more fun," hair color can have a big impact on how you look and feel about yourself. So it's not surprising that a 2005 P&G survey found that 65 percent of women aged 15-75 had colored their hair in the past 12 months. But studies show that hair dye isn't having such a positive effect on your health or that of the environment.

To Dye For - A new breed of eco-friendly salons offer natural, nontoxic colorants and treatments
by Lisa Stasiulewicz

"For Julie Ebner, owner of Juju Salon & Organics in Philadelphia, her motto—'Find a better way to beauty'—applies right down to her shop's floor. Not only does she offer all organic, sulfate- and paraben-free products and chemical-free dyes, but she also hired a local green contractor to make sure renovations to the salon were eco-friendly and tat the paints used were fume-free. 'I'm committed to providing a natural experience every way I can, from organic ways to treat hair problems to using flea-market furniture,' says Julie. 'The result is healthier hair, healthier people, and a cleaner environment—everyone wins'"

Cutters: Juliene Ebner

Interview with Juliene Ebner: "...Getting a great haircut is a given here, but we're also about community. We do tons of workshops: shiatsu, feng shui, classical Indian music. The people who come to this salon, they're artists, healers, reiki practitioners, massage practitioners, yoga teachers, meditation counselors, nutritionists..."

The Lucky April Listings
by Ashley Primis

"If you notice the absence of noxious odors at Juju Salon & Organics (716 S. Fourth St., 215-238-6080), it's because the staff uses the ammonia-free Organic Colour Systems (from $55), which produces amazingly shiny, bright, and nonfading hues while going gentle on the scalp."

Culture Shock: Things That Matter To People Who Matter
by Lisa Levinson, Director, Public Eye: Artists for Animals

"My new fling is with Max Green Alchemy, a cruelty-free cosmetics line available at Juju Salon & Organics (716 S. Fourth St.), which specializes in organic products that are not tested on animals. I appreciate finding products with the leaping bunny and vegan logos on them. That way I know what I'm buying won't offend my senses or my sensibilities. My current fave is the Scalp Rescue shampoo. Smells yummy and is light enough to use daily. My hair looks and feels better since I've been using it! Great for swimmers and swingers."

Best Salon For Pregnant Chicks Looking To Color Their Roots

Owner and stylist Juliene Ebner didn't consider organic products until after the birth of her daughter, Lucie. Unlike the toxic hair color found in most boxed products, Juju Salon & Organics uses Organic Colour Systems by Herb UK, a permanent, nontoxic solution for covering gray hair, roots or just getting rid of mousy brown locks. Ebner says it has no harsh odors because it's made of organic botanicals and herbs. Even her gyno sends expecting moms to Juju.

juju spa & organics

Last Sunday I indulged myself with a 90 minute specialized facial at JuJu Spa and Organics with Renee. I have gotten many facials at various spas throughout Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, NYC, and even several in Europe. I am taking the time to write this review (which is something I normally do not do), because the Spa experience at JuJu is hands down the best I've ever encountered...
