Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia in the air may cause severe burns in your skin, eyes, throat, and lungs. In extreme cases, blindness, lung damage, or death could occur. Breathing lower concentrations will cause coughing and nose and throat irritation.

The Dangers of Ammonia

Conventional hair color, both professional and drugstore brands contain ammonia. Ammonia is a common and inexpensive hair color additive used to allow color molecules to penetrate the hair's cuticle. Because of its caustic properties, ammonia leaves the hair in a compromised, weakened and "roughed-up" condition. Color longevity is also compromised — fading and discoloration will often occur. Our color line uses natural oils and extracts of aloe vera, comfrey, orange and grapefruit - instead of ammonia to soften the hair's cuticle. A low, warm heat is used in tandem with the oils to help imbue the hair with rich and permanent color.
