If you are new to color at our salon and you have had an allergic reaction of any kind in the past with conventional color, we stress that you ask for a patch test prior to receiving color. We recommend a patch test to be done no less than 48 hours before your appointment.
Even though our color lines are less harsh than conventional ammonia-based color lines, certain highly chemical-sensitive persons may still have a reaction. The safety of our clients is our priority. And we are here to help you make the best and safest decision regarding your hair and your health.
O&M COR.color
O&M COR.color is our main non-toxic, low-chemical color line. In addition to being ammonia-free and formulated without PPD, this color from Original Minerals uses exclusive Molecular Blend Technology (MBT). This revolutionary coloring system pre-links pigments, allowing them to develop more effectively, giving super grey coverage, while minimizing the risk of scalp irritation. Contains hydrating desert harvest botanicals like desert peach, B12 rich wattle seed and organic signature oils to nourishes the hair and scalp. Free from resorcinol, wheat, gluten and soy ingredients and is certified Cruelty-Free & Vegan by PETA.
* Please note: PPDs, which are pigment agents in hair color, may be replaced with TDS (Toluene 2,5 Diamine Sulfate) in the O&M COR.color line. TDS is less of an allergenic. Clients with a known, test-confirmed PPD allergy should consider our Elumen line, described below, which does not contain PPD or TDS.
Elumen
We now carry Elumen that is dermatologist recommended, and the go-to for anyone with severe PPD allergies. No ammonia, no peroxide, no PPDs – with outstanding vibrancy, shine and durability. (Please ask your allergist/dermatologist/doctor if this is a good choice for you.)
Here’s what a very allergic and very happy client has to say about her color experience with Elumen: “Thank you for taking the time to work with me yesterday in making the Elumen work despite my skepticism about any hair dyes at this point. I am happy to report that I had no allergic reaction! It also does seem to have covered almost everything – I am still in shock, but in a good way 🙂 Thank you again for a wonderful first experience at your salon. – P”
What’s So Scary About PPD?
PPD is a chemical substance used in permanent hair color and has been cited to produce severe allergic reactions in some clients. According to the BBC, doctors in the United Kingdom believe an allergic reaction resulting from PPD is likely the cause behind a 38 year old mother of two slipping into a coma after using a hair color believed to contain PPD (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-15828266). Most recently, PPD has been credited as the possible cause of multiple myeloma, acute leukemia, bladder cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which has been cited as the possible cause of death for the late Jacqueline Kennedy. To eliminate these risks and ensure a safer salon atmosphere, we only carry color lines that are PPD free.
The Dangers of Ammonia
Conventional hair color, both professional and drugstore brands contain ammonia. Ammonia is a common and inexpensive hair color additive used to allow color molecules to penetrate the hair’s cuticle. Because of its caustic properties, ammonia leaves the hair in a compromised, weakened and “roughed-up” condition. Color longevity is also compromised — fading and discoloration will often occur. Our color lines use natural oils and extracts of aloe vera, comfrey, orange and grapefruit – instead of ammonia to soften the hair’s cuticle. A low, warm heat is used in tandem with the oils to help imbue the hair with rich and permanent color.
According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Division of Toxicology in Atlanta, Georgia, ammonia is listed as a hazardous substance which has related negative health effects. Ammonia is irritating to the skin, eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Nearly all professional and “box” hair color contain ammonia.Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia in the air may cause severe burns in your skin, eyes, throat, and lungs. In extreme cases, blindness, lung damage, or death could occur. Breathing lower concentrations will cause coughing and nose and throat irritation.
